Left to Right, Top to Bottom: Bears Ears National Monument, Lalibela, Angkor, Rapa Nui (Easter Island)
The world's heritage places, from iconic archaeological sites and historic buildings to vibrant urban neighborhoods and cultural landscapes, excite and enthrall us all. Yet, these awe-inspiring symbols of human ingenuity and identity require intentional protection and preservation. The impacts of climate change, the ravages of conflict, the pressures of new development, and the inertia of neglect all require thoughtful, science-based strategies to safeguard our world's most treasured places.
In the face of the global housing crisis, the challenges of affordable and social housing go far beyond construction cost and speed—they encompass spatial quality, social equity, governance mechanisms, and environmental impact. Directly addressing these complexities, this July, the Institute of Smart City and Management - University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH - ISCM), in collaboration with partners from Korea, Singapore, and Thailand, will host the International Conference Dwelling in Transition: Reimagining Affordable and Social Housing across Scales and Systems. The conference will be a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral platform for professionals to come together, share knowledge, and rethink the meaning of "affordability" through lenses of design, policymaking, finance, and sustainability. With new definitions, models, and theoretical frameworks built upon expert research, this event aims to reshape housing paradigms to better suit today's economic and social realities. Main Topics: 🏠 Margins: Grey Areas and Emergent Practices 🏠 Materials and Methods: Constructing Affordability 🏠 Instruments: Policy, Finance, and Governance The conference also welcomes papers exploring topics related to design, planning, technology, finance, impact measurement, community engagement, sustainability and livability. ☀️Submission Guidelines: Please send a single PDF file including all required information to iscm@ueh.edu.vn, cc to haihln@ueh.edu.vn by 8:00 PM (GMT+7:00) | June 30, 2025. The seventeenth edition of the Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (BEAU) will take place in December 2025. The event consists of an exhibition hosted in a former thermal power station repurposed as a cultural center in Ponferrada, in northeastern Spain. This edition will be curated by architects Ander Bados Sesma, from Atelier Ander Bados, and Miguel Ramón López, a Ponferrada native and architect at Estudio Lamela, under the curatorial proposal titled flujos comun.es ("common flows"). Their curatorial proposal responds to the theme of the open call: Architecture as a Policy for Change, an invitation to reflect on the role of the discipline in processes of social, economic, and environmental transformation. Within this framework, flujos comun.es presents a critical perspective on the challenges associated with hyperconnectivity. The call for proposals and project submissions is currently open, and will be until the end of July, depending on the category.

The first edition of the Copenhagen Architecture Biennial will take place from 18 September to 19 October 2025. Organized by CAFx (Copenhagen Architecture Forum), the event marks a transition from the previous annual Copenhagen Architecture Festival to a more expansive platform for architectural exploration. The theme of the inaugural edition, "Slow Down," invites participants to reflect on how the rapid pace of modern life affects the built environment. According to the organizers, this thematic shift encourages the envisioning of spaces that promote sustainability, longevity, and mindful engagement with our surroundings. In line with this vision, the organization launched an open call earlier this year for pavilion proposals that embody principles of circular design while serving as hubs for public programming during the event. Two winning proposals, modular structures by Slaatto Morsbøl and Tom Svilans x THISS Studio, were selected, each offering an approach to architectural deceleration.

The Los Angeles Design Festival (LADF) returns June 26-29, 2025 with a citywide celebration of community, creativity, and inspiring design. This year's theme, "Design Futurism," is a solution-oriented exploration of human potential. When envisioning the future, design is inherently a part of our collective imagination: a tool for reimagining how we connect, create, and challenge existing narratives. This concept expands beyond the exploration of technological spectacle. This year, LADF invites all to explore Design Futurism through various lenses of our collective human experiences.
Invited by Carlo Ratti, PILLS is participating in the main exhibit’s Special Project with the research, writing, and design of the Circularity Handbook and its Spatial Installation.

The question whether distinctive features marked the drawings and creative process of architects and planners in the GDR may seem obvious, but looking at individual pictures alone is unlikely to lead to new insights. During the decades of specific GDR architecture, up to the mid-1980s, East German planning offices worked with the standard tools used all over the world. As everywhere, talents were unevenly distributed, each design collective having its own particularly gifted “drawing ace” to provide the decisive visualisations of a building idea for important project presentations or competition submissions. So it would be quite possible to illustrate a stylistic history of four decades of GDR architecture with the help of selected drawings from various years and regions.
