In this article, we are highlighting proposals that were awarded the first prize in international competitions. Each one of these projects showcases a unique conceptual approach and responds to a different program. With a mixed-use project in France, a market in Helsinki, an aquarium in New York and a civic building in Norway, to name a few, the variety of these unbuilt interventions underlines the vast scope of the architectural field.

JTP Designs New Russian Eco-City District in Kazan

London-based practice JTP won the competition to create a 760ha masterplan for a new eco-city district in Kazan, Russia. Working with OXO Architects, Terra Scape and XTU Architects, the team proposed the development outside the regional capital of Tatarstan. Dubbed Ecopolis, the design centers on a series of "green fingers" that connect to a landscape ring around the district.

Europe's Largest Wooden Construction Revealed by Triptyque, Duncan Lewis, PARC and OXO

Triptyque, Duncan Lewis, PARC Architectes, and OXO Architects reveal a design for Europe's largest wooden construction in Arcueil, France. Called Ecotone, the project is sited in the Coteau Area of southern Paris as a multi-use space set to link city and landscape. The design takes the form of two hybrid hills with trees and a large staircase containing several terraces and patios. Ecotone aims to rethink the future of sustainable cities and timber construction.
